The state also reported the highest single-day death count due to coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic with 322 fatalities. The total death count in the state has reached 56,652.

With the recovery of 30,296 patients today, the total number of active COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra has come down to 5,01,559. The state's recovery rate stands at 82.36 per cent at present.

Amid a surge in cases, the Maharashtra government has imposed a night curfew and weekend lockdowns.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said this morning that the state may run out of Covid vaccines in three days and that he had asked the centre to send more stocks soonest, with cities like Mumbai forced to shut down vaccination centres or turn away people.

After Maharashtra's SOS on vaccines, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan today slammed what he called "deplorable attempts by some state governments to distract attention from their failures and spread panic among the people". The "lackadaisical attitude" of the Maharashtra government had singularly bogged down the entire country's efforts to fight the virus, he said in a furious statement. Mr Vardhan said that "there is no shortage" of vaccines.

Meanwhile, the state health minister also said that a new Covid strain could be infecting people faster in Maharashtra and informed that samples were being tested to verify the theory.
