New Delhi: Days after taking voluntary retirement, former Indian Police Service officer Prasun Banerjee has been fielded as the Trinamool Congress candidate from Malda North seat in West Bengal for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Here are 5 points about Prasun Banerjee

  1. Mr Banerjee served as Inspector General (IG) of Raiganj range before taking voluntary retirement. After his resignation, IG North Bengal Rajesh Kumar Yadav took additional charge as IG Raiganj range.

  2. Mr Banerjee is a 2006-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre. In his career of nearly two decades, Mr Banerjee served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of South Dinajpur and Malda range. He was also DIG of Malda and Balurghat.

  3. Apart from being an IPS officer, Mr Banerjee is an actor, filmmaker, and writer.  He has acted in many Bengali films. He gained popularity for acting in films like Desher Mati, Sona Roder Gaan, and the serial Guddi.

  4. Mr Banerjee has also directed plays like Shakunir Pasha and Droh Kaal. He helmed a short film titled Just Across The River and a documentary titled Paradise Lost as a director.

  5. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP's Khagen Murmu defeated Trinamool's Mausam Noor from Malda North seat. She represented the Lok Sabha constituency from 2009 to 2019. After she lost the seat in 2019, the party sent her to Rajya Sabha in April 2020.
