Lieutenant-Colonel Injured in Encounter with Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir

Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir: A Lieutenant-Colonel of 160 Territorial Army was severely injured today during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district which has been going on since last night.

"An officer of the rank of Lt Colonel has been injured in the encounter in Handwara area of Kupwara today," an army official said.

Security forces on Saturday launched a search operation in Bhawan village in Zachaldara area of Handwara following information about the presence of terrorists in the area, a police official said.

A brief exchange of firing took place between the two sides even as reinforcements of security forces were rushed to the area to prevent the terrorists from escaping.

The firing resumed this morning and was going on intermittently till reports last came in, the official said.

Last week, Colonel Santosh, the Commanding Officer of 41 Rashtriya Rifles, died after he was critically injured during an operation in the Haji Naka forest area of Kupwara near the Line of Control in Kashmir.
