Karnataka government to appeal against mining ban in Supreme Court

Karnataka government to appeal against mining ban in Supreme Court
Bangalore: The Karnataka government will soon file an affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking reconsideration on the ban imposed on mining in the state.

The mining ban has resulted in nearly 150,000 people losing their livelihood. Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda says the state could experience a loss of around Rs 4,000 crore revenue a year.

"We will file an affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking a reconsideration on the ban imposed on mining in the state. More than a lakh people in the areas are without jobs now," said Mr Gowda. He also said the state would submit a set of guidelines and rules to the Supreme Court to check illegal mining.

"The ban on mining activity has also impacted the steel industry," Mr Gowda added.

The Supreme Court had, in August, banned all mining activities in Bellary and Tumkur in Karnataka after the Central Empowerment Committee report that mining had caused severe environmental damage in the region.
