Journalists to organise nationwide stir over safety issue

New Delhi: Journalists from various media organisations will hold a nationwide demonstration on June 25 to raise the issue of their safety in the wake of the murder of senior crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey last week.

Organised by the National Union of Journalists, the scribes will hold a rally in front of Parliament, besides in state capitals across the country, and demand the Centre to form a national security policy for journalists, among other measures to ensure their safety.

A memorandum will also be submitted to President Pratibha Patil in this regard, said Secretary General of NUJ(I) Ras Bihari, adding that J Dey's murder was not a one-off case as similar incidents had taken place in Chhattisgarh and Arunachal Pradesh where scribes were targeted.

In many parts of India, physical and mental violence has been inflicted on journalists and these incidents must be taken seriously by the government, he said.

He also demanded that people who attacked journalists should be treated in the same manner as those who attacked government employees.
