Trichy:

Women voters are set to play a decisive role in electing the next government in Tamil Nadu, with their share in the electorate rising to a commanding 51 percent - outnumbering men by a significant 12.2 lakh.

According to the latest electoral data, Tamil Nadu has 3.24 crore women voters compared to 3.11 crore male voters. The gender gap, which stood at 5.7 lakh in 2021, has more than doubled after SIR, underlining the growing political weight of women in the state's electoral landscape.

The impact is visible across constituencies. Sholinganallur tops the state with 2.74 lakh women voters, while Perambur leads within Chennai with 1.42 lakh women electors. In Chief Minister MK Stalin's Kolathur constituency, women voters (1.07 lakh) comfortably outnumber men (99,000), reflecting a broader trend across urban and semi-urban pockets.

Historically, women voters have played a crucial role in shaping electoral outcomes in Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK enjoyed strong support among women during the eras of M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, driven by expansive welfare schemes. On the other hand, M. Karunanidhi focused on empowering women through self-help groups, expanding their socio-economic participation.

After Jayalalithaa's death, the ruling DMK, led by MK Stalin, has aggressively courted women voters through welfare initiatives such as free bus travel and a monthly assistance of Rs 1,000. Now, with elections around the corner, the battle to win women's support has intensified dramatically.

The DMK has promised to double the monthly assistance to Rs 2,000 and introduce Rs 8,000 worth of coupons for women to purchase household appliances of their choice. The opposition AIADMK, led by Edappadi K Palaniswami, has matched the promise of enhanced financial aid while also offering free refrigerators and Rs 10,000 cash support to families.

Adding a new dimension to the contest is actor-turned-politician Vijay, who enjoys a cult following among youth and women. His party TVK has announced a Rs 2,500 monthly assistance scheme for women, along with three free LPG cylinders annually. The party has also promised gold assistance for weddings and newborns, positioning itself as a strong contender in the welfare-driven electoral battle.

Meanwhile, Naam Tamilar Katchi leader Seeman remains in the fray, attempting to carve out support with his distinct political messaging.

With competitive populism reaching new heights, women voters are no longer just a key demographic - they are the decisive force. As Tamil Nadu heads into a high-stakes electoral battle, the question remains: will it be Stalin, Palaniswami, Vijay or Seeman who succeeds in winning the trust of women and, with it, the mandate to govern?
