I want justice for my son, says Army officer's mother

New Delhi: Captain Sumit Kohli, a gallant young Army officer, died under mysterious circumstances four years ago. Though the Army says it was a suicide, Sumit's mother Veena Kohli firmly believes his son was murdered in Kupwara by those who wanted to hide the alleged fake encounter of 2004.

And the mystery still remains. On Saturday, Defence Minister AK Antony met Captain Kohli's anguished mother and assured her of a re-look at the case.

"My basic demands are that the post-mortem reports of my son be made clear. It is not clear to me what these reports are saying, if this is not done I will apply for a CBI enquiry that's what I told the Defence Minister," said Ms Kohli.

Captain Kohli's Commanding Officer Colonel Rahul Pandey, however, maintains that the young officer was going through personal problems which led him to a suicide.

"In March 2006, he was awarded Shaurya Chakra by the President of India, in presence of all our top officials. If there was something wrong why did he not report then? Who could have stopped him?" Pandey said.

Although the official court of enquiry also concluded that Captain Kohli committed suicide, the family is not willing to accept the conclusion.

The death of Captain Kohli has raised many questions. His family has been seeking justice for the past four years. It's now for the Defence Minister to step in and get justice delivered in the case as now it is the question of the image of the Army.
