Hyderabad tense, Class X exams postponed

Hyderabad: There is a lull in the deserted old city area of Hyderabad after three days of unrest in the curfew-bound areas. One person has died so far. (Read: Clash-hit Hyderabad tense; more forces deployed)

As a result, Class 10 exams scheduled to be held on 31 March, 1 April have been postponed in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

"The curfew right now is indefinite," says Hyderabad's Assistant Commissioner of Police.

As people demand answers to what the police is doing to control the situation, there is a big question mark on who was behind the riots. The clashes began after some people protested against the putting up of religious flags near a place of worship.

A survey report of the riot-affected areas in the Old City by Cova, a citizen activist group, claims the riots were orchestrated. (Read: Old Hyderabad tense curfew to continue till 6 pm)

According to the group, various localities were first surveyed by a group of 30-40 youths who left after initiating chaos. Then the armed mobs followed and attacked each other.

Now, even the police chief is backing Cova's claim.

"To some extent, there was an organised attempt," said Police Commissioner A K Khan.

But the government is still clueless about who could have engineered these riots.

More than 100 people have been arrested for the riots so far and some of the worst hit areas include Aliabad, Lal Darwaza, Gowlipura and Shahalibanda.

"We are unable to find autorickshaws, buses and that is why we are forced to travel by walking," said an agitated Hyderabadi.

This latest communal clash has put the Rosaiah government in a tight spot. Adding to this pressure is the National Commission for Minorities, which has decided to send an inquiry team to Hyderabad to probe the clashes.
