We have been trying for this through Mahatma Phule Samata Parishad for last so many years. I thank Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sharad Pawar, Sonia Gandhi, Gopinath Munde, Sharad Yadav, Opposition leaders for making this possible.

We will finally have some data on OBC numbers and even OBCs will get their fair share in 'rashtra sampati', he said.

Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde too welcomed the decision saying he was happy that his efforts to mobilize support for caste-based census have borne fruit.

Now, the underprivileged among the OBCs will get just, he added.

A Group of Ministers on Wednesday gave its nod to include caste in census from biometric stage of enumeration.

The GoM, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, recommended to the Union Cabinet for inclusion of caste in census from biometric stage. The biometric phase, expected to start sometime in December, covers photographing, fingerprinting and iris mapping of citizens for the National Population Register (NPR).

The cabinet will take a final call on the issue soon.
