Goa's Education Minister detained at Mumbai airport
Mumbai: A minister in the Goa government was detained on Saturday morning at the Mumbai airport with Rs. 25 lakh in cash.

Atanasio Monserrate, Goa's Education Minister, was released late on Saturday evening after a case was registered against him under the Customs Act for carrying more currency than legally permitted.

Mr Monserrate was inducted into the cabinet in 2008. He currently has 14 criminal cases pending against him, including an attack on a police station in Panaji in 2009.

His son, Rohit, was arrested for raping a minor German girl in 2008.

Mr Monserrate was earlier with United Goan Democratic Party but recently joined the Congress. He represents the Taleigao constituency which borders Panaji.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said his party is 'waiting and watching' the situation at this juncture.

"Let's wait before we jump to the conclusion. If the minister has really done something wrong, then we will take action," Kamat told PTI.

The Opposition BJP has warned that they will not allow the current Goa Legislative Assembly session to continue till Mr Monserrate is dropped from the Cabinet.
