Delhi Church Attack: No Headway in Investigation

St Alphonsa's Church in Delhi was fifth one in the city to be attacked since December.

New Delhi:

A day after a church in South Delhi was allegedly vandalized, investigation into the case appears to have made little progress. The police, who said it was a case of robbery and not vandalism, filed a case late on Monday night, but they are yet to identify any suspect.

The police said they were finding it difficult to track down the culprits due to the lack of CCTV footage.

The First Information Report, or FIR, said it was a case of theft and trespass. The church authorities claimed it was a case of deliberate attack.

Around 3 am on Monday, unidentified men scaled the wall of St Alphonsa's church in Vasant Kunj, broke opened the main gate and ransacked the sacristy cupboards and other property, the church authorities had claimed.

The police action came after the home ministry sought a report on the status of security at religious places and the action taken in similar cases. St. Alphonsa's was the fifth church in the city to be targeted since December.

Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports, the National Human Rights Commission has also asked the home ministry, the Delhi government and the Delhi Police commissioner for detailed reports.

After a church in west Delhi's Vikaspuri was vandalized last month, Delhi's Archbishop Anil JT Couto had said, "a clear pattern of orchestrated attacks is emerging as more and more churches are targeted, vandalised and set on fire."
