Dimple Yadav, Marching With CJP Protesters, Detained, Alleges Samajwadi Party

Dimple Yadav - a Lok Sabha MP and the wife of party boss and ex-Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav - was detained by Delhi Police, her party claimed Monday afternoon.

Yadav and other SP leaders were reportedly detained as they marched from parliament to Jantar Mantar to express solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party - the civil protest led by Abhijeet Dipke to demand government accountability for leaked competitive exam papers.

"The detention of Lok Sabha MP Dimple Yadavji, who was raising the voice of students in Delhi, and other SP MPs by the police, along with the lathi charge on students, is highly condemnable and undemocratic," the Samajwadi Party said on X, hours after protesters and police clashed.

A delegation of MPs led by Dimple Yadav had marched through the streets of Delhi, raising chants and slogans accusing the central government of mismanagement of examinations.

"Today the youth want to raise concerns but the government refuses to listen... Despite people being on a fast, the government is so rigid and callous it refuses to heed anyone else's views... youth and students are bearing the brunt and suffering immense stress," Dimple Yadav said.

Hours earlier police and security personnel used tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters who had declared their intention to march, peacefully, from Jantar Mantar to the parliament building - a distance of roughly two kilometres.

Protesters and police personnel sustained minor injuries in the scuffles that followed, while mobile internet was temporarily shut down in parts of the wider central Delhi area. The police have pointed out the CJP protest had been denied permission to hold that protest march; on Monday the cops also said issued orders banning gatherings of five or more people.

The Cockroach Janta Party was launched in May by Abhijeet Dipke as a satirical digital outfit, following a controversy over Chief Justice of India Surya Kant's "parasites" and "cockroaches" remark.

Within days, it took the internet by storm and gained millions of followers across social media platforms. It also attracted support from various Opposition politicians, activists, artists, and sportspersons.

30-year-old Dipke, who has lived in the US for the past two years, then returned to India in June to lead the protests in Delhi, calling for reforms in the education sector following alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including paper leaks.

He was later joined by activist Sonam Wangchuk, who sat on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar on June 28.

Wangchuk, 59, however, was taken to hospital by the police last Saturday, citing his health conditions.

In a handwritten note issued from the hospital on Monday, Wangchuk said his fast would end only if the government took responsibility for alleged paper leaks and other failures in the education system or if MPs and leaders of various political parties assured him that they would raise the issue in Parliament.
