New Delhi:
The Centre has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to reassess the Liberhan Commission report on the Babri Masjid demolition.
The development came after the premier investigating agency returned the report to the Union Home Ministry saying there's no evidence of allegations against leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Singh (RSS).
Sources in the CBI said that the contribution of the Liberhan Commission report is "disastrous". They also said that allegations against the BJP and RSS leaders are without any evidence.
In such a scenario, sources said, acting against the said leaders will not be possible.
The sources also added that the Centre wants the CBI to act to justify the expansive exercise in putting together the report.
The government had handed over the Liberhan report to the CBI on November 24, 2009 asking the investigating agency to look into the leads generated, which purports to be fresh evidence, by the Commission during the course of its investigation.
Liberhan Commission, which submitted its report after 17 years in 2009, had indicted 68 people including former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the demolition case and had recommended fresh investigations into their role.
The report, besides terming Vajpayee as pseudo-secularist, had found all of them culpable for communal discord.
