New Delhi:
Keep central forces in West Bengal for some more time - that's what the West Bengal chief minister has requested the government, in the context of fighting the Naxals. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee met the home minister on Sunday, and the prime minister on Monday morning.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has, in particular, asked that central para-military forces in Lalgarh remain in this troubled part of his state to help provide stability.
Lalgarh, in the corner of West Midnapore bordering Jharkhand, is 250 kms south west of Kolkata. In June, a huge operation of state and police forces helped reclaim Lalgarh from the Maoists, who had declared it a liberalized zone, one they were administrating. The locals here have repeatedly accused the police of atrocities, while the state maintains that it is fighting the most aggressive form of Naxal terror here.
Bhattacharjee says he has suggested that anti-Naxal operations begin soon in the areas bordering Jharkhand. He believes that these should be handled jointly by the state police and central security forces.
