A Tale of 2 Circulars at IIT Roorkee and a Yoga Controversy

PM Narendra Modi performing yoga at Rajpath on Sunday for International Yoga Day

Roorkee: IIT-Roorkee has denied that it forced its students to join the government's grand-scale yoga programme on Sunday after a circular mailed by a student to NDTV appeared to suggest that.

A circular dated June 10, purportedly from the Dean of IIT Roorkee, said: "All the students of IIT Roorkee summer hostels are hereby directed to compulsorily attend one week yoga camp from June 18, 2015 to June 24, 2015. Attendance in the yoga camp is mandatory and will be recorded on the spot every day."

IIT Roorkee, however, has said its circular dated June 16 only "cordially invites" students to join the yoga camp.

The government had repetedly said that participation in yoga demonstrations was voluntary.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the biggest of the events organized at Delhi's ceremonial road Rajpath, and performed yoga poses with nearly 36,000 students, officials, politicians and others.

In the days before the holiday declared by the UN following PM Modi's appeal, bureaucrats were photographed practicing yoga with instructors.
