The Congress on Tuesday released its first list of 42 candidates for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, naming its Assam unit president and three-time MP Gaurav Gogoi as the party nominee from the Jorhat constituency. This will be the first time the Congress' deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, who is an MP from the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency, will contest the Assembly polls.

In a post, Gogoi wrote he was grateful for the opportunity and thanked party president Mallikarjun Kharge, MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and others.

"I am grateful to Congress President Shri @kharge ji, CPP Chairperson Smt Sonia Gandhi ji, LOP Shri @RahulGandhi ji, Chairperson @priyankagandhi ji, GSO

"I am grateful to the people of Jorhat Lok Sabha without whom I would not have reached this position," he added.

Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia will also contest from the Nazira seat, which he has held since 2011.

Both Gogoi and Saikia are sons of former chief ministers - Tarun Gogoi and Hiteswar Saikia.

Diganta Barman, the MLA from Barkhetri, who is the son of another former chief minister, Bhumidhar Barman, has also been given the party ticket from the seat again.

Among the other notable names, Congress MP Rakibul Hussain's son, Tanzil Hussain, will contest from Samaguri while MP Pradyut Bordoloi's son, Prateek, has been fielded from Margherita. Former Union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar's son, Pranjal, has been given the ticket from Chabua-Lahowal.

Girish Baruah has been nominated from Bongaigaon, Mahananda Sarkar from Barpeta (SC), and Ramen Singh Rabha from Boko-Chaygaon (ST). Nandita Das has been fielded from Hajo-Sualkuchi (SC), while Satyabrat Kalita will contest from Kamalpur.

Mira Borthakur Goswami has been named from Dispur, Ashok Kumar Sarma from Nalbari, and Ratul Patuwary from Tihu.

From the central and Upper Assam seats, the party has nominated Binanda Kumar Saikia from Sipajhar, Bubul Das from Jagiroad (SC), Nurul Huda from Rupahihat, and Utpal Bania from Raha (SC).
