Afzal Guru should be hanged on anniversary of Parliament attack, says BJP

Afzal Guru should be hanged on anniversary of Parliament attack, says BJP
New Delhi: The BJP has demanded that Afzal Guru, convicted for his role in the attack on the Indian parliament in 2001, should be hanged on Thursday, the eleventh anniversary of the attack.

"If the government hangs Afzal Guru on December 13 itself, there cannot be anything better to pay homage to the martyrs of the December 13 attack on Parliament... It should hang the attacker of Parliament during the session of the House," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said in Delhi on Tuesday.

Mr Guru's petition for clemency is pending with the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

Mr Guru, who is in jail in Delhi, was given the death sentence in 2004 for helping to plan the attack, in which nine people were killed and 16 injured.  Human rights activists have said he was not given a fair trial.

Parliament was in session in December 2001 when five gunmen drove into the complex in a car that had stickers which gave it access to the high-security area. They then opened fire.  Security personnel countered them.  The terrorists were killed.
