What does increased echogenicity mean?
Question
I am 24 years old. I just had a medical examination and it was diagnosed that I have renal problems. My creatinine level is 150 umol/mg. The ultrasound showed that I had increased echogenicity of both kidneys. I would like to know what is increased echogenicity. The nephrologist gave me Imidapril 10 mg (half a tablet to be taken once every day). Is this the right medication?

Increased echogenicity on ultrasound makes a clinician suspect a kidney disease as such changes are seen in various diseases involving kidneys. Your serum creatinine is also high, which confirms a kidney dysfunction. You need more investigations like spot urine protein / creatinine ratio to measure degree of protein in the urine and further investigations. Imidapril is an ACE inhibitor, which is a kidney protective drug and used for patients with chronic kidney disease. I would suggest you to visit a nephrologist again and get further investigations done.
