  • Gulzarsaab was born Sampooran Singh Kalra on August 18, 1936 in what is now Pakistan. He worked as a car mechanic before becoming an author. After he started writing he took the pen name Gulzar Deenvi.
  • The first movie Gulzarsaab wrote lyrics for was Bimal Roy’s Bandini in 1963. He wrote one song for the movie, but that was to become it’s most famous song – Mora Gora Ang Lay Le, picturised on Nutan. Gulzarsaab wrote lyrics for many music directors, most notably for R D Burman with whom he had a long and successful association. Among his famous films are Anand, Parichay, Guddi, Aandhi, Ghar, Golmaal, Ijaazat, Dil Se, Bunty Aur Babli and Omkara.
  • Gulzarsaab also wrote dialogues and screenplays for Anand, Khamoshi, Aandhi, Ijaazat, Guddi and Angoor, among other films. Mere Apne was his first film as director, in 1971. He also directed Parichay, Koshish, Achaanak, Aandhi, Khushboo, Mausam, Angoor, Ijaazat and Maachis, among other films. His last film as director was 1999’s Hu Tu Tu, starring Tabu. He also directed Mirza Ghalib, a TV serial, in1988. While Gulzarsaab never had a blockbuster as a director, every film was critically acclaimed and fetched him a slew of awards.
  • Among his collection of awards, Gulzarsaab counts 19 Filmfare Awards for lyrics, dialogues and director. He won five National Awards, the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002, an Oscar and even a Grammy for Jai Ho. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2004.
  • Gulzarsaab married actress Rakhee. They separated when their daughter Meghna was a year old, but never divorced.
