Man arrested for registering false robbery case

New Delhi: A man, who allegedly registered a false case of car robbery to recoup a gambling loss, was arrested here, police said on Friday.
   
The arrested has been identified as Puneet Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Chhaya Sharma said.
   
Gupta, who owns a stamping factory in Bawana, had on March 28 approached police claiming that three youths robbed his car at gunpoint. He claimed they also forced him to sit inside the car and also robbed Rs 8,000.
   
During investigations, police received an input that the complainant had lodged a false report regarding the robbery, after selling it to recoup his loss and debts occurred in gambling.
   
"We came to know that no such incident of robbery took place as told by Gupta. He, instead had sold it to someone in Haryana through a mechanic in Bawana. Efforts were made to locate the mechanic.
   
"Yesterday, the mechanic Bijender was identified and he told us that the car had been sold to one Pawan through his friend Rajkumar. He further told that Puneet Gupta is well known to him as he used to visit the workshop," Sharma said.
   
Raj Kumar also confirmed that his friend bought the car from Gupta.
   
"When confronted, Gupta confessed to having lodged a false report of robbery. He disclosed that he had borrowed loan and bore huge loss in gambling. Hence, he decided to sell of his car to pay the part of debts," Sharma said.
