Heavy rains lash Delhi, traffic disrupted

New Delhi: Heavy rain lashed the capital on Tuesday resulting in massive traffic jams and water-logging in several parts of the city, and exposing the civic bodies' lack of preparedness.

It rained heavily in the city for about two hours from 12:30 pm with the rain gauges measuring a whopping 58.2 mm in a single day.

Today's torrential rain brought relief to the people reeling under hot and humid weather.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 35.6 degree Celsius, two degrees above normal while the minimum was recorded at 25.6 degrees, one degree below normal.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) received 18 complaints of water-logging and six of tree felling from various parts of the city.

The areas where water-logging was reported were Jawahar lal Nehru Marg, Ambedkar Stadium, Tilak Bridge, Mathura Road to Bhagwan Dass road, ITO, IP flyover, Minto Road, Jheel, Kasmiri Gate, St Stephens Hospital, ISBT to Ritz cinema, Tigri, Bhikaji Cama Place and R K Puram among others.

Vehicular movement was affected in many parts of the city.

"It took me about 90 minutes to reach Parliament Street from Delhi Secretariat. It was choc-a-bloc and vehicles were not moving," said Manav Chakrabarty, a businessman.

According to the weatherman, there could be one or two spells of rain on Wednesday and temperature would be between 26 and 33 degree Celsius.
