IIMA student takes 'political' plunge at summer recruitments

Ahmedabad: A student of the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) has chosen politics over the corporate world, at the ongoing summer placement interviews taking place on the campus. The student has chosen to intern with a political leader, looking away from all the big names making a beeline to recruit summer trainees from the management mecca.

The interviews of the third cluster of the summer placement process got over on Wednesday. In 2009, two students of the institute had chosen politics over corporate offers. Krishna Chepuri chose to intern with Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member Sitaram Yechuri, while Srijanpal Singh opted out of placements to join politics.

The student of the current PGP batch has chosen to intern with PD Rai, Member of Parliament (MP) and an IIMA alumnus. The student's role will be to support the legislator in participating actively in parliamentary and national policy-making processes and project management, on specific initiatives, at the national and constituency level.

The IIMA summer placements saw first-time recruiters like Arvind Brands (subsidiary of Arvind Ltd in Bengaluru), advertising giant Ogilvy & Mather, the S Kumar's Group and Onirca.
Students got interview opportunities with more than 30 companies across a large spectrum of sectors, including media, FMCG, telecom, pharmaceuticals, apparel, advertising, IT, automobiles, banking and consulting. IT major Wipro made the maximum number of offers across multiple roles in consulting, eco-energy and corporate finance. Several recruiters like Airtel, Heinz, Britannia, Marico and Aircel offered sales and marketing roles while Mahindra & Mahindra offered roles in general management. This year, once again, automobile giant Renault offered international roles.

Navin Talreja, managing partner with O&M, commented, "We came in expecting students to be stronger on the mathematical side, but we were pleasantly surprised to see the varied skill sets that the candidates possess. The soft skills, especially, will add value to an advertising agency like us." The next cluster on November 18 will include internship opportunities with several start-ups, apart from firms in niche consulting and financial services.
