17 NIFT students' designs go on display

Ahmedabad: Seventeen students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Gandhinagar have put up their apparel designs on display at the institute, as part of their project submission made towards the end of their year-long certificate course.

The students from Garment Production Technology and Apparel Design (GPTAD) discipline of NIFT, Gandhinagar have designed garments based mainly on nature like birds, flowers, Indian culture, water (surface and underwater) and butterflies.

"We were given this theme by our professor Pavan Godiawala. We had to choose a theme and work on our apparels accordingly. As per the procedure, after choosing a theme, we had to collect the right pictures to support it. Then, fabric and colour analysis was carried out wherein the fabric's colour suitability was decided upon. Sketches were made and the dyeing process was carried out accordingly," Krupa Thaker, a student said.

Another student, Anal Thakkar added, "Dummy measurements are taken and brown paper cuttings are made before the apparel is donned on the mannequin. Apparel is made with the help of muslin cloth, following which the final apparel or product is created with the rightly dyed fabric and later it is donned on the mannequin. Surface ornamentation is the last step in the entire process."

While the batch consists of 35 students, only the 17 best apparels are on display. Most of these garments can be worn in two ways. For instance, if it's a gown, one can either wear it as gown or the top portion can be worn as a top with a contrasting bottom and probably a jacket, shrug or a scarf can go with it.

According to Prof Godiawala, this course has been designed for people who are either already associated with the fashion industry or for those who intend to join the industry soon. He said that, "This course caters to about 30-40% students who belong to the industry. Another 30% students are related to the industry but not mainstream fashion industry and the remaining are freshers who intend to join their family business after completing the course.

Generally in other courses, students are taught to learn the nuances of fashion in 12 years. But in this course, they will be taught and made to study all in a year's programme. Hence, they undergo tremendous grilling sessions and project work," he added.
