Uttarakhand: Toll rises to 680; 12,000 rescued on Sunday

Dehradun: Over 80,000 people have been evacuated, including 12,000 on Sunday, to safer areas in Uttarakhand. The Air Force in its biggest operation ever air-lifted 3000 people on Sunday from the flood-ravaged state.

  1. Death toll in the state has risen to 680. Uttarakhand Minister Yashpal Arya, however, said the number of dead in the state may go up to 5,000. (Read)

  2. Heavy rains are predicted for today and the rescue teams will be racing against time to evacuate the thousands, who are still stranded. (Watch)

  3. All 550 people, who were left stranded in Jungle Chatti - located between Gaurikund and Rambara in the Kedarnath axis - have been evacuated, rescue officials have told NDTV. Rescue teams also claimed that all stranded people in Kedarnath and Gaurikund have been evacuated. (Read)

  5. Rescuers have also evacuated 2,500 people from Badrinath after restoring the road link to Hanuman Chatti. The pilgrims will then have to walk another 10 kilometres to Gobind Ghat, from where they will travel in cars to Joshimath where they will be airlifted. 8000 pilgrims are still stranded in Badrinath.   7. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to locate survivors in remote areas that still remain inaccessible.

  8. The Home Ministry has distributed 25 satellite phones to enable uninterrupted communication during rescue operations. Fifty more phones have also been procured.

  9. Over 60 helicopters of the Army and Air Force have been pressed into service. Around 10,000 army and paramilitary troops, members of the country's disaster management agency and volunteers are involved in the rescue and relief efforts.

  10. An aid of $150,000 (around Rs.90 lakh) would be given for relief work in Uttarakhand, US Ambassador to India Nancy J. Powell said Sunday. (Read)
