Aamir Khan has once again lent his voice to a public awareness initiative for the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan 2026, this time in an interactive video on road safety shared by National Highways Authority of India on Instagram. In the clip, the actor highlights one of the most common yet dangerous habits on Indian roads - using a mobile phone while driving.

When asked about the one road behaviour he would like to change, Aamir Khan points to distracted driving, especially people talking, texting, or checking their phones while behind the wheel. He notes that this habit not only puts the driver at risk but also endangers fellow road users sharing the road. The actor indicates that many motorists casually glance at messages, attend calls, or browse directions while driving, often underestimating how even a few seconds of distraction can lead to serious mishaps. His core message in the video is simple: staying attentive on the road is non-negotiable.

Addressing a common concern around using navigation apps, Aamir Khan clarifies that drivers need not keep looking at the phone display for directions. Instead, he recommends relying on the voice-guided audio navigation feature on apps like Google Maps, which can provide turn-by-turn instructions without requiring the driver to shift focus from the road.

A 2024 study by IIT Delhi's Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre found that fatalities linked to mobile phone use while driving rose from 1,040 deaths in 2021 to 1,132 in 2022. The same study reported total road deaths on national highways climbing to 61,038 in 2022, up from 56,000 a year earlier.

If You Must Use Your Phone While On Road, Follow These Safety Steps

If using your phone becomes unavoidable, the safest option is to pull over at a secure spot first. Park away from moving traffic, switch on hazard lights if needed, and then attend the call, reply to a message, or check directions.

For navigation, set the route before starting the journey and enable audio prompts. If your car supports it, use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to reduce manual phone handling. Avoid texting in traffic, at signals, or during slow-moving jams, as these are moments when attention drops the fastest. Even a brief glance away can significantly delay reaction time.
