The first day of running at the Australian Grand Prix produced contrasting stories across the practice sessions. In the opening outing, Ferrari looked strong as Charles Leclerc recorded the quickest lap. He was followed closely by teammate Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, giving Ferrari early momentum.
The second session shifted the balance, with McLaren and Mercedes taking charge. Oscar Piastri, racing at his home circuit, delivered the fastest time of the day at 1:19.729. He was trailed by Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, who completed the top three. Hamilton, Leclerc, and Verstappen filled the next positions, rounding out the leading group.
Further down the order, Aston Martin continued to struggle with persistent engine concerns, while Cadillac faced technical setbacks of its own. Sergio Perez was unable to register a lap due to a sensor fault, adding to the team's difficulties.
In FP3, George Russell set the fastest time, while teammate Kimi Antonelli suffered a heavy crash that disrupted the hour. The session began late due to barrier repairs from an earlier F3 incident, with Franco Colapinto leading cars onto the track. Carlos Sainz's Williams stopped near pit entry, triggering yellow flags, a Virtual Safety Car, and later a red flag. Once resumed, most drivers logged laps, though Lance Stroll stayed sidelined with a power unit issue. Midway through, Charles Leclerc briefly led before Russell reclaimed top spot, ahead of Antonelli and Hamilton.
2026 Formula 1 Australian GP: Qualifying

In Q2, Antonelli returned to action after his FP3 crash, with Mercedes completing repairs in time. Ferrari, quick in practice, found Q2 more challenging and had to push harder. Isack Hadjar moved up to third, while Hamilton showed speed in the first sector but slowed in the middle and backed out of his lap. He later returned on fresh soft tyres, moving up to sixth. Hulkenberg escaped the drop zone with a late effort, while Leclerc booked his place in Q3 with a 1m19.357s lap. Bearman improved but only reached 12th, while Colapinto and Gasly also failed to progress. Eliminated in Q2 were Hulkenberg, Bearman, Ocon, Gasly, Albon, and Colapinto.
Rookie Arvid Lindblad impressed by reaching the top ten in his first Formula 1 qualifying session. Bortoleto also took Audi into Q3 at the first attempt. Lindblad had a lock-up at pit entry while Bortoleto's Audi stopped, forcing him to take evasive action. Bortoleto was rolled away and could not take part in Q3, leaving a nine-car shootout.
Antonelli's car was briefly released with a cooling fan still attached, which fell onto the track and was shattered after Norris ran over it, causing another red flag. Once cleared, the session resumed for the final runs.
