Ahmedabad students to get chance to walk with international cricketers during World Cup

Ahmedabad: Twenty six students of Ahmedabad will get an opportunity to walk in to the stadium with international cricketers during the World Cup. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has organised a school contact programme for creating AIDS awareness.

Eight schools are participating in the two-day ICC Inter School Mini World Cup tournament which kicked-off at MS Ground, at Shah Alam on Friday.

The winning school will get a replica of the world cup, while some students will also get the chance to participate in pre-match festivities. Fourteen children from the host school and 12 from the winning team will walk into the stadium with the playing nations' flags and the ICC flag. All the teams participating in the tournament will receive certificates.

In the eight-over per side match, Divine Buds defeated Best High School by 40 runs, while Hebron High School defeated Kumkum High School by ten wickets. Seven Days High School were also among the winners on the first day.

School Contact Programme is held in two phases - Mini Cricket World Cup and Aids Awareness programme. As part of the initiative, students have been participating in HIV awareness organised by Think Wise, a partnership between the ICC, UNAIDS, UNICEF and the Global Media AIDS Initiative.

"This is a very unique concept. In India, if any social message is attached with cricketing activities, it will get wide coverage. For students meeting their cricket heroes and talking to them is going to be a big incentive. At the same time social message is also conveyed. Our ninth class students attended the Aids awareness programme," said captain Pandey of St Kabir School while referring to AIDS awareness programme. Ahmedabad will host three WC matches, Australia v Zimbabwe, New Zealand v Zimbabwe and a quarterfinal.
