Schoolgirl Jumps to Death Near Mumbai, Parents Blame Classmate

Mumbai: A Class 10 boy has been arrested in Mumbai over the suicide of his classmate last week. The 14-year-old girl jumped from her seventh-floor home over obscene messages on a fake Facebook account allegedly set up by the boy.

The girl's parents have alleged that the boy had been stalking their daughter. The police, however, say the teens were close.

When the girl's parents complained to the police recently, the boy was called to the police station and allowed to go after a warning.

The boy set up a fake Facebook account in the name of the girl and posted obscene messages as revenge, the girl's family alleges.

"She was happy. We don't know what is there on Facebook. I am suspecting that boy only. Had the police taken a step then, my daughter would have been alive," the girl's mother told reporters.

"He used to follow my daughter everywhere, at home, in school, at classes. We tried to make him understand a lot of times, nicely, that my daughter is young and immature but still he didn't understand. I had registered a complaint also at the police station about this. He just refused to understand," she added.

The family claims that when the girl learnt about the Facebook posts, she jumped off her apartment building at Mira Road on the outskirts of Mumbai on October 20.

The police suspect that the story was different.

Police sources say the boy and the girl were in touch on Facebook despite the complaint by her family.

Phones and computers seized from the teenagers have been sent for forensic analysis.

"This was not all about teasing and harassment. This was an affair. Things are under investigation. They shared phone numbers. We are investigating their Facebook accounts," senior police officer Jagdish Shinde told NDTV.

The boy has been sent to a juvenile home.
