Mumbai: Tests allegedly show that lawyer Jahanvi Gadkar, who crashed her Audi Q3 car into a taxi in Mumbai late on Monday night, had in her blood, three times the level of alcohol permitted when driving, police sources have said. Her police custody ends tomorrow and she will be produced in court in the afternoon.

The 35-year-old lawyer's advocates blood samples for testing were taken on the day of the accident. Under the Motor Vehicles Act 30 mg of alcohol is the permissible limit for driving.

Two people traveling in the taxi were killed in the head-on collision.

The police are in the process of collecting more physical and electronic evidence in the case. They are also recording the statements of witnesses, including that of the waiter who served alcohol to the lawyer at a south Mumbai restaurant on that night. The police have also collected a copy of the bill.

During questioning, the police allege, Ms Gadkar has said that she drank whisky instead of the beer that she usually drinks, to celebrate a new project. Police sources said she told the police that she took the wrong lane of the freeway and drove rashly because she had been drinking whisky.

The police suspect Ms Gadkar drove about 11 km in the wrong lane before she crashed into the taxi in a head-on collision.  Eyewitnesses have told NDTV that the lawyer's car was travelling at a very high speed with music blaring.

Numan Saboowala, 16, who was in the taxi, told NDTV that people around initially refused to help. "An Innova car had stopped to see what had happened.  I opened their door, but they just drove away from there. There were very few people who came ahead to help us. There is no humanity left in the people of Mumbai."
