Women protesters arrested near Rajasthan CM's residence

Jaipur: Over 30 young women protesting de-recognition of their teachers training degree were arrested today, after some of them allegedly threatened to immolate themselves in front of the Chief Minister's residence, police said.

"36 girls were arrested. Thirteen of the protesters were carrying bottles of petrol and were proceeding towards the Chief Minister's residence. However, we arrested them before anyone could attempt suicide," Jose Mohan, Superintendent of Police, Jaipur(South) said.

The students of National Teachers Training Programme have been staging protests since 2008, when the degree was de-recognised by the government.

They are demanding that their degree be made equivalent to basic school teachers course so that they are eligible for government jobs, he said.
