Orissa CM faces flak for Maoist attack

Bhubaneswar: On Saturday opposition has demanded Orissa Chief Minister's resignation following Maoist attack that killed 13 policemen and a civilian.

On Friday night a group of 500 Maoists struck Nayagarh district in Orissa and looted over a thousand guns including AK-47 rifles.

There were simultaneous attacks at a police training school, three police stations and a police outpost.

The Maoists threw grenades and petrol bombs and 10 police vehicles were set ablaze.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who visited the place on Saturday morning said that the policemen were outnumbered.

Patnaik said, ",Five hundred heavily armed people attacked the police training school, the district armoury and led simultaneous attacks on a number of police stations. The 60-odd policemen were beaten by the numerical strength of the attackers.",

But the Opposition is not willing to buy that. It has demanded Patnaik's resignation.

There was pandemonium in the Assembly throughout the day. The Congress said the latest attacks so close to the state Capital is a worrying sign.

J B Patnaik, Former chief minister of Orissa said, ",Nayagarh is at the heart of Orissa. If they could strike at Nayagarh, which is only one and half hour away from here, how long will it take for them to strike at Bhubaneswar.",

Constable of a Police Training School in Nayagarh and a survivor of the attack said, ", They took away everything, we had in the armoury. We had SLRs, AK-47, LMG and whole lot of ammunition. They even cracked open our treasury and took away the cash.",

This was the third attack on police armoury in four years in the state.
