New Delhi:
The government is set to introduce a contentious bill in Lok Sabha on Monday, which seeks to fix liability in case of a nuclear accident.
It's a bill the main Opposition parties like the Left and the BJP are opposed to.
Here are the key provisions of the bill:
The sources in Directorate of Atomic Energy (DAE) have told NDTV that in case of a nuclear accident, the Indian operator Nuclear Power Corporation (NPCIL) will be liable. But the liability is capped at Rs 500 crore.
For compensation beyond that, till Rs 2133 crore, the government of India will be liable. Over this, India can seek compensation for foreign countries as per the IAEA pact.
But foreign suppliers of nuclear reactors won't have to pay.
The supplier has to give quality assurance, but can be penalised for poor quality of equipment supplied.
