Srinagar: Kashmir Valley continued to remain in the grip of severe cold as the minimum temperature across the region hovered several degrees below the freezing point.

Although the minimum temperature witnessed a marginal increase of 0.8 degrees Celsius, the summer capital of the state shivered with the mercury settling at a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said.

Leh in Ladakh saw one of the coldest nights of this season as the minimum temperature recorded there was minus 20 degrees Celsius, he said.

Nearby, Kargil town recorded a low of minus 17.6 degrees Celsius, an increase of 3.4 degrees from yesterday.

In Kashmir valley, Gulmarg skiing resort was the coldest place at minus 14.0 degrees followed by Pahalgam resort at minus 11.2 degrees Celsius, which along with Kupwara town registered light snowfall overnight.

Traces of snow were also seen in Gulmarg resort. Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 7.6 degrees Celsius followed by Kokernag resort at minus 7.3 degrees Celsius, he said.

North Kashmir's frontier town recorded a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius.
