Hyderabad has been grappling with a scandal that includes a prominent local doctor who was married to Kiran Reddy, niece of Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy.
Twenty six-year-old Kiran was discovered unconscious at her home on Sunday morning. She was a dermatologist.
On Saturday night, her husband, Chaitanya, attended a bachelor party with Kiran for her brother. Later, she phoned her brother to let him know that she had reached home safely. Mr Reddy was reportedly heavily drunk after the party. He slept in a separate room.
On Sunday, after discovering her unconscious, Mr Reddy summoned an ambulance. His wife was taken to Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills, where she was declared dead. The couple, who married five years ago, has a young daughter.
The police first registered a case of "unnatural or suspicious death." It was changed last night to murder after Mrs Reddy's father said he suspects her husband and in-laws of being involved in her death. The post-mortem has been conducted and the results are awaited. Sources say she had a major head injury.
