The Civil Aviation Safety Advisory Council (CASAC) set up by the government within a week of the Mangalore crash has met for the first time today to discuss measures to strengthen safety.

The advisory council has members from across the aviation industry and is spearheaded by the Union Civil Aviation Minsiter Praful Patel. More powers will now be given to the Directorate general of Civil Aviation and a court of inquiry will be set up into the crash of the Air India Express tragedy in Mangalore.

"A court of inquiry into the Mangalore air crash will be set up very soon", said Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel after the meeting.

"The DGCA will be given full autonomy and the government will set up independent mechanisms to investigate air accidents," he added.
