At Delhi's Jantar Mantar, 300 Congressmen Lose Their Shirts

The workers shouted slogans of a 'dictatorial government' amid chest thumping and drum beats.

New Delhi: About 300 men belonging to the Youth Congress took off their shirts today in the heart of the capital to show solidarity with the 25 Congress lawmakers who have been suspended from the Lok Sabha.

Amid drum beats and slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the sea of shirtless men were unable to quite explain the message they meant to send out by going shirtless, though one man made an attempt, somewhat half-hearted, when he said, "If things go on the way they are with this government we will soon all be stripped of our clothes and be sent to jail."

Others beat their chests, wore thick chains around their necks or simply waved posters and masks.

The Congress is boycotting the Lok Sabha over Speaker Sumitra Mahajan's decision to suspend 25 of its 44 members for five days from the House for unruly behaviour while demanding the resignation of three top BJP leaders caught in controversies.

The main opposition party has taken its protests to the streets and has been joined in these by its affiliates like the Youth Congress, whose members also staged a protest yesterday outside the Delhi residence of Ms Mahajan.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has called the suspension a "murder of democracy."

The shirtless protest today was staged at Jantar Mantar, Delhi's venue for protests and sit-ins. While the message it was meant to send out was lost, the protesters drew the attention they were seeking.
