Battle for Ernakulam: 4-time MP vs ex IAS officer vs war correspondent

Congress' KV Thomas and Independent candidate Christy Fernandez will contest against each other from Ernakulam.

Ernakulam, Kerala: A four-time Congress MP is pitted against a former IAS officer and a celebrated war correspondent in the battle for Ernakulam in Kerala, which goes to polls on April 10.

Congress' KV Thomas, the union Food Minister, says he is confident of winning again in the constituency. The fight, he says, is not between individuals but political parties. (Full coverage: India Votes 2014)

While campaigning, Mr Thomas is frequently heard bandying the Food Security Act as one of his major achievements. The law enacted recently is aimed at providing much cheaper food to 67 per cent of India.

"I am confident of my win. I know my constituency in and out. They know whom to send to Delhi," Mr Thomas declares.

Ernakulam may have voted Congress for the past few polls but in its rural areas, criss-crossing flags of Congress and CPI-M - the party that leads the opposition front - seem to portend a close battle and narrow margins of victory.

Aam Aadmi Party candidate Anita Pratap says reporting from warzones has prepared her for the poll battle. "I got an excellent training as a war correspondent, because this is a war. You should see the anger in people against the Congress and KV Thomas, especially since he shows his face once in five years," said the 55-year-old.

At Vipin Island, this former award-winning journalist says her biggest investment, unlike her rivals, has been her specially-designed campaign vehicle.

The third angle in this contest is Christy Fernandez, a retired IAS officer contesting as an independent candidate backed by the Left Democratic Front. The opposition coalition hopes that he will be strong competition to the Congress candidate for the support of the district's sizeable Latin catholic community.
