Support to BJP in civic polls will make Delhi a 'dustbin': Sheila Dikshit
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said supporting the BJP in the upcoming civic polls would mean allowing the city to look like a "dustbin". She also alleged that the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) never performed its basic duty of ensuring minimum cleanliness.

Addressing a series of election meetings in East Delhi, Ms Dikshit criticised MCD for "unhygienic atmosphere" in the areas under its jurisdiction and said the city would look like a "dustbin" if BJP regains control of the civic body.

Promising an efficient municipal administration if Congress is voted to control MCD, Ms Dikshit said accumulation of garbage will become a thing of the past and efforts would be made to streamline the municipal departments.

Criticising MCD for "inefficiency", Ms Dikshit claimed more than 57 per cent of funds given by Delhi government remained unspent in the civic agency.

Referring to a number of building collapse in the city, Ms Dikshit said large scale illegal constructions have taken place in the city in the last five years due to "rampant corruption" in the building department of MCD.

"Hundreds of innocent people were crushed to death in a number of incidents of building collapse in the last five years," she said.

Ms Dikshit addressed election meetings in Shakarpur, Old Seelampur, Vishwasnagar, Jhilmil Colony, Trilokpuri and Mayur Vihar Phase II.

Noting that there was a dire need of parking facilities in the city, she said MCD has not been able to commission even two parking sites out of the 17 planned.

Ms Dikshit claimed Congress has been able to accelerate the pace of progress during its 13-year-rule in the city.

While referring to BJP's "misrule", Ms Dikshit said a number of people lost their lives due to outbreak of dropsy during rule of its government in Delhi from 1993 to 1998.

Local MP and Ms Dikshit's son Sandeep Dikshit said the Congress government in Delhi has ensured uniform development in all parts of the Delhi.

Health Minister A K Walia charged BJP has been misleading the people by raising national and international issues in MCD election.
