New Delhi: Delhi BJP yesterday slammed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the issue of giving compensation to peasants hit by unseasonal rains, alleging that the Delhi government was "playing with the sentiments" of farmers.

"CM Arvind Kejriwal played a cruel joke with the farmers causing a great resentment among the farmers of Delhi," he said.

"Almost a month later neither proper crop loss survey has been done nor has any rational basis of compensation been announced as yet" Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay claimed.

In a statement released by the state BJP, he also said that Delhi's BJP unit will approach Lt Governor Najeeb Jung for increasing the compensation.

Charging Mr Kejriwal with "playing a cruel joke in the name of compensation", Mr Upadhyay alleged, "farmers have been given petty cheques of Rs 7,000 for crop loss on 4 acres and Rs 14,000 for crop loss on a 6-acre farm. Going by the rates of announced compensation for a 4-acre loss, the amount should be Rs 76,000 and for 6 acres it comes to Rs 1,20,000."
