Fake cops dupe old woman of real gold

Bangalore: Fake cops continue to cheat people into parting with their gold. A 75-year-old former joint director of the Statistics Department was robbed of her gold valuables worth Rs 1.38 lakh on Wednesday.

S Bangari was returning home from the market near St John's Church Road when a man posing as a police officer in plain clothes approached her.

"As soon as I approached the man who was on a stationary motorcycle by the roadside, he introduced himself as a police officer. He asked me not to wear gold on the road. He told me that an old woman like me had been murdered recently. He said had merely called me to warn me as senior citizens were being targeted," she said.

Trusting him, she took off all her gold jewellery. Two other fake cops accompanying the first two helped the woman put it in her purse.

When she checked her purse, it had a few pebbles wrapped in a piece of paper instead of the two gold chains, a pair of bangles and gold ring that should have been there.

Bangalore has been witnessing several incidents of mugging by fake cops in the recent past.
