City Police Commissioner D Sivanandan has asked his men to "voluntarily" contribute money to financially assist the family of Police Sub Inspector Dinanath Shinde, who was killed after a drunken woman hit a police jeep in Mumbai.
"A circular has been issued to all police stations and other departments of Mumbai police asking officer-level policeman to offer Rs 50 each and lower-rung cops to give Rs 10 each. However, it is not compulsory. If anyone wants to give less or more money than we have asked for, they can," Sivanandan told PTI.
By this move, they might collect Rs 10 lakh which would be very helpful for Shinde's family, he said.
The Mumbai police department has a strength of over 43,000 personnel.
"Shinde is one of the family members of our police department. As a small gesture, we decided to contribute voluntarily in this manner," the commissioner said adding "in the future too, the department would ensure all possible help to the family."
Dinanath Shinde of the traffic police department and a biker, Afzal Makhnejiya, were killed when 27-year-old drunk woman Nooriya Haveliwala rammed her car into a bike and a police jeep at Marine Drive in south Mumbai on Saturday.
Home Minister R R Patil on Monday had said that he would ensure Shinde's family gets Rs 25 lakh as compensation from the government.
