Wearing Google Glass, Chennai doctor performs two major surgeries

Dr JS Raj Kumar of the Lifeline Hospitals in Chennai performed the surgeries wearing Google Glasses.

Chennai: In a first for India, a doctor successfully operated on two patients in Chennai yesterday wearing Google Glass.

"Both patients are doing extremely well. Not a single protocol was skipped. I'm quite excited," Dr JS Raj Kumar of the Lifeline Hospitals in Chennai, said after the surgery.

A post bariatric hernia surgery- which reduces a patient's stomach usually with a gastric band- was performed on a 45-year-old woman from the US. Another man underwent a anti-reflux surgery following heartburn- a procedure performed to correct a problem with the muscles at the bottom of the oesophagus.

Mr Shiva Thirumazhusai, Founder CEO of Nasotech that develops applications for Google Glass and who was part of the surgery project, says, "We have the framework and all we need to do is build applications".

The procedure was live-streamed, allowing people a chance to see the doctor at work. "Medical College students around the world can watch and learn from landmark surgeries with no disturbance to the procedure. Expert surgeons from any part of the world can guide surgeons during difficult surgeries,"Dr Kumar had said.

He had stressed that the Google glasses, sometimes described as "a wearable computer", will give him "access to a wealth of surgical information in a jiffy" during the operation.
