Jethmalani backs Binayak Sen, ready to defend him
New Delhi: Support is pouring in for human rights activist Dr Binayak Sen from unexpected quarters. BJP leader and senior advocate Ram Jethmalani has come out in support of the jailed doctor.

Jethmalani told NDTV, "Binayak Sen is not a traitor, I don't think whatever he has done amounts to sedition. My opinion of him is much better than that of the police. My impression is that there is no case against Sen."

The octogenarian lawyer also said that he would consider it an honour to defend Sen. Jethmalani also ruled out any conflict of interest on fighting Sen's case despite being from the BJP.

"I have not read what Sushma Swaraj has said, her views are different from mine."

Digvijay seeks review of verdict against Binayak Sen

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh today jumped to the defence of Binayak Sen. The veteran leader sought a review of the trial court judgement sentencing Sen to life imprisonment on sedition charges.

"I feel that Sen is a very fine human being and because of this, the judgement against him needs to be reviewed," he told.

Sen, Naxal ideologue Narayan Sanyal and Kolkata-based businessman Piyush Guha were sentenced to life imprisonment last Friday for sedition and colluding with Maoists to establish a network to fight the state.

Fifty eight-year-old Sen, a paediatrician by training and vice-president of People's Union of Civil Liberties, had been accused of acting as courier for Sanyal, who was in jail, by carrying his messages and letters to the underground Maoists.

Sen was arrested on May 14, 2007 from Bilaspur and was in jail for two years before being granted bail by the Supreme Court in May last year.
