New Delhi: The recent cases of ceasefire violations along the International Border with Pakistan are "extremely serious and provocative," Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday.

"We had hoped things would improve after flag meet, but these (ceasefire violations) are creating an environment not conducive to the relationship between two countries," said Mr Jaitley.

He added that the Army and Border Security Force were "fully alert" and "were responding to every situation".

The Defence Minister said India was hopeful that the ceasefire violations by Pakistan would abate after meetings between the Directors General of Military Operations.

"But for the incident where a jawan was killed, after the discussions of the DGMOs, we were hopeful that things would be better," Mr Jaitley said.

A soldier was killed and another injured on Saturday in an ongoing operation against separatist guerrillas near the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

In his first public comments since India called off high-level talks with Pakistan last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had yesterday said that Islamabad made a "spectacle" of the tentative peace process by meeting with separatist leaders from Kashmir, but added that India seeks "peaceful, friendly and cooperative ties" with its neighbour.
