Ankara, Turkey: A strong explosion was heard in the Turkey capital on Friday after the army said it had seized power and declared martial law and a curfew, AFP journalists reported.

It was not immediately known what caused the explosion but jets that had been present in the skies throughout the late evening were still flying over Ankara.

The military has declared martial law and curfew in the country, and has claimed power.

President Tayyip Erdogan has denounced the coup attempt by "minority in military" and has urged the people to take to streets.

In a statement released soon after the military was seen on streets, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the elected government was still in power.

Social media services in Turkey have been suspended.
