Israel has multi-layered air defences against attacks by Iran, which has fired hundreds of ballistic missiles and suicide drones at Israel over the past two days as the Middle East rivals traded heavy blows.

In Israel's north, four people were killed earlier when a strike hit the town of Tamra, taking to 13 the death count in the country since the fighting with Iran began on Friday.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany will strengthen protection of Israeli, Jewish institutions against Iran.

The Iranian media on Sunday said at least 128 people were killed in Friday and Saturday attacks by Israel. 

Israel and Iran traded fire for a third straight day on Sunday, with rising casualties and expanding targets marking a sharp escalation in the conflict between the longtime adversaries.

Iranian media reported a blast in central Tehran on Sunday, as Israeli kept up its attacks on Iran for a third day.

The Tasnim news agency shared footage of the explosion site, saying it occurred near the central Valiasr Square.

The video showed columns of smoke rising from the area, with debris and shattered glass scattered across the scene. Other media carried similar reports. (AFP)

Two drones launched from Iran towards Israel were shot down over Iraq by the US-led international coalition to defeat the Islamic State group, two Iraqi military officials told AFP on Sunday.

"The international coalition at Ain al-Asad (military base) shot down two Iranian drones that were en route to Israel," one official said, referring to an Iraqi airbase housing foreign troops in western Iraq.

The drones were shot down overnight Saturday to Sunday, he added, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the matter. (AFP)

The Israeli Air Force said it has intercepted 20 drones launched toward Israeli territory in the past hour by Iran.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has reiterated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons and is open to an agreement that would ensure that.

“But if the purpose of an agreement is to deprive Iran of its nuclear rights, then naturally, we are not prepared to accept such an agreement,” he said in a meeting with diplomats.

Araghchi had planned to attend a sixth round of indirect talks with the U.S. over Iran’s disputed nuclear program before they were called off after Israel’s surprise bombardment of Iran’s military and nuclear sites on Friday.

Iran has always said its nuclear program was peaceful, and the U.S. and others have assessed it has not pursued a weapon since 2003. But it has enriched ever larger stockpiles of uranium to near weapons-grade levels in recent years and was believed to have been able to develop multiple weapons within months if it chose to do so. An Israeli oil refinery firm says an Iranian strike over the weekend caused “localized” damage to its complex in the northern city of Haifa.

Bazan Group said in a report to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange that as a result of the strike, pipelines and transmission lines between facilities were damaged. It said the refinery facilities were functional but that some of the downstream facilities had been shut down.

It said no one was wounded.

Iran said an Israeli strike that killed the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s missile program also took out seven of his trusted deputies, seriously disrupting its command.

Iran previously acknowledged the death of Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Guard’s aerospace division in Friday's strike.

Also killed were Gen. Mahmoud Bagheri, Gen. Davoud Sheikhian, Gen. Mohammad Bagher Taherpour, Gen. Mansour Safarpour, Gen. Masoud Tayyeb, Gen. Khosro Hasani and Gen. Javad Jarsara, the Guard said Sunday.

In the early hours of Saturday, a fireball lit up the Iranian skyline as an Israeli drone strike hit Phase 14 of the South Pars gas field, one of the world's most vital energy hubs.

Israel's military said Sunday that its air force had targeted "more than 80" positions in Iran's capital Tehran in the third day of the most intense confrontation yet between the two arch-foes.

The strikes were conducted "throughout the night", the military said in a statement, and "targeted more than 80 objectives, including the headquarters of the Iranian Ministry of Defense, the headquarters of the nuclear project (SPND), and additional targets where the Iranian regime hid the nuclear archive".

US tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced that the Starlink satellite communications system has been activated in Iran after Tehran imposed nationwide internet restrictions in the wake of Israeli aggression against Iran.

Iran has asked Cyprus to convey "some messages" to Israel, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday, adding he expected to speak to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later in the day. He did not say who specifically the messages were from or what they said, although they come after the Cypriot foreign minister spoke to his Iranian counterpart on Friday night.

Christodoulides also said he was not happy with what he said was a slow reaction by the European Union to the unfolding crisis in the Middle East. Cyprus, the closest EU member state in the region, had asked for an extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, he said. Projectiles sent by Iran to strike Israel were visible from various locations across Cyprus on Friday and Saturday night.

"It is not possible for the EU to claim a geopolitical role, to see all these developments and for there not to be at the very least a convening of the Council of Foreign Ministers," Christodoulides told journalists.

Cyprus has offered to assist in the evacuation of third-party nationals from the region, and has called on all sides to refrain from actions which could escalate the conflict. (Reuters)

Fresh blasts were heard on Sunday in the Iranian capital, an AFP journalist said, as Israeli attacks continued for the third day.

Iranian news outlets Khabar Online and Ham Mihan reported that air defence systems over west and northwest Tehran were activated "to counter new attacks", while Shargh daily shared a video of columns of smoke in the city's east. (AFP)

Signaling Iran believed Israel’s strikes would continue, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said metro stations and mosques would be available as bomb shelters for the public beginning Sunday night, Iranian state television reported.

Britain could potentially support Israel in its conflict with Iran, but the decision to send additional military jets to the Middle East was made mainly to protect British bases and personnel, British finance minister Rachel Reeves said on Sunday.

Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on each other overnight into Sunday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks by Israel so far were nothing compared with what Iran would see in the coming days. Speaking to Sky News, Reeves called for a de-escalation in the conflict and said the decision to send additional jets to the region was a "precautionary move".

Asked if Britain would come to Israel's aid if asked, Reeves said: "We have, in the past, supported Israel when there have been missiles coming in." She added: "We're sending in assets to both protect ourselves and also potentially to support our allies."

Britain was involved last year in protecting Israel from missile attacks from Iran. In April, British planes shot down Iranian drones heading for Israel and in October it said two of its fighter jets and an air-to-air refuelling tanker were involved in trying to intercept Iranian missiles. The jets did not engage any targets.

The European Union on Saturday voiced "deepest concern" at the escalation of conflict between Iran and Israel, calling for restraint to avoid dangers such as a leak of radioactive material.

Their statement came as Israel targeted Iran's air defence capabilities Saturday, following the deadly strikes it began a day earlier on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, prompting counterattacks by Iran.

It called "on all sides to abide by international law, show restraint and refrain from taking further steps which could lead to serious consequences such as potential radioactive release".

Issued by the office of Kaja Kallas, the bloc's foreign policy chief, it expressed "deepest concern at the dangerous escalation that threatens to destabilise the Middle East following Israeli strikes on Iran and Iran's response".

Iran has said it would limit its cooperation with the UN's nuclear watchdog, while criticising it for its silence over Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

"It makes no sense that these peaceful sites come under attack and that the agency remains silent," Iranian deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said.

"Iran will no longer cooperate with the agency... as it once did," he added.

The Israeli military said Saturday citizens were permitted to leave shelters where they had been told to take refuge after Iran launched a new barrage of missiles towards Israel.

"Following the situational assessment, the Home Front Command published that it is now permitted to leave protected spaces in all areas across the country and to remain near them," the military said in a statement. (AFP)

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said early Sunday that the country had struck sites used by Israeli warplanes for refuelling, as the two rival states bombarded each other for a second day.

"Installations producing fuel for fighter planes and the (Israeli) regime's energy supply centres were targeted by a multitude of drones and missiles," the Guards said in a statement.

"The Iranian armed forces' offensive operations will continue more fiercely and more broadly if the depravity and attacks (against Iran) continue." (AFP)

Germany, France and Britain are ready to hold immediate talks with Iran over Tehran's nuclear programme in an effort to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said.

Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels said Sunday they had launched several missiles at Israel as it came under Iranian fire, following a massive Israeli bombardment campaign on the Islamic republic.

Throughout the night emergency services sifted through the rubble looking for injured residents. Israel warned of more attacks after Tehran fired waves of missiles and drones that killed three people and wounded dozens in Israel.

Israel’s military kept up attacks on Iran following earlier strikes that targeted nuclear and military sites.

Iranian media said Sunday that police had arrested two suspects over alleged links to Israel's Mossad spy agency, on the third day of heavy exchange of fire between the two foes.

"Two members of the Mossad terrorist team who were making bombs, explosives, booby traps and electronic equipment were arrested" in Alborz province, west of Tehran, the Tasnim news agency reported, citing a police spokesperson. (AFP)

New explosions boomed across Tehran as Iranian missiles entered Israel’s skies in attacks that Israeli emergency officials said caused deaths around the country, including four in an apartment building in the Galilee region. A strike in central Israel killed an 80-year-old woman, a 69-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy, officials said.

Casualty figures weren’t immediately available in Iran, where Israel targeted its Defense Ministry headquarters in Tehran as well as sites that it alleged were associated with the country's nuclear program. Israel on Sunday issued evacuation warnings to Iranians living near weapons production facilities in Tehran as the two nations continued to exchange missile attacks that began on Friday. "The Israeli military will strike these sites and will continue to peel away the Iranian snake’s skin in Tehran and everywhere — targeting nuclear capabilities and weapons systems," Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement.

Israel had earlier issued an evacuation warning to Iranians residing near weapons facilities in Iran, an Israeli military spokesperson said in a post on X in Arabic and Farsi. The spokesperson said the warning included all weapons factories and supporting facilities.

President Donald Trump on Sunday said that the US had "nothing to do" with the overnight attack on Iran, hours after Israel claimed an "extensive series of strikes" on the headquarters of the Iranian Defence Ministry and a nuclear project.

Iranian media said Sunday that Israel attacked a facility affiliated with the defence ministry in the central city of Isfahan, on the third consecutive day of Israeli strikes.

"One of the centres affiliated with the Ministry of Defence in Isfahan was attacked, and possible damages are under investigation," ISNA news agency reported quoting deputy provincial governor Akbar Salehi.

Israeli authorities said the country's airspace was closed Sunday for a third consecutive day, after two nights of deadly missile strikes from Iran in response to Israel's military campaign.

"Due to the security situation and in accordance with the instructions of security authorities, Israeli airspace is currently closed to civilian aviation -- no incoming or outgoing flights are operating," said a joint statement from the transport and foreign ministries.

Others states have urged restraint and warned against a larger conflict.

US President Donald Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed in a phone call on Saturday that the conflict between Iran and Israel "should end."

But on Sunday morning, Trump issued a warning to Iran saying it would experience "the full strength" of the US military if it attacks the United States, reiterating that Washington "had nothing to do" with Israel's strikes on Tehran's nuclear and intelligence facilities.

Iraq -- a close ally of Tehran, but also a strategic partner of Iran's arch-foe the United States -- has approached the Iranian and US governments in a bid to prevent being caught up in a regional escalation. (AFP)

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that Israel had "crossed a new red line" by targeting Iran's nuclear sites, after Tehran on Saturday had pledged to limit its cooperation with the UN's nuclear watchdog, criticising it for its silence over Israeli strikes. "It is entirely clear that the Israeli regime does not want any agreement on the nuclear issue. It does not want negotiations and does not seek diplomacy," Araghchi told foreign diplomats, saying the attack launched on Friday was an "attempt to undermine diplomacy and derail negotiations".

The fiercest ever exchange of fire between the arch foes came amid ongoing talks between Tehran and Washington seeking to reach a deal on Iran's nuclear programme. Before the Israeli strikes, the two sides had been set to hold a sixth round of negotiations in Oman on Sunday.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday that Tehran would not attend nuclear talks with the United States so long as Israel kept up its attacks on the Islamic republic. Western governments have repeatedly accused Iran of seeking a nuclear weapon, which it denies. (AFP)

Iran unleashed deadly barrages of missiles at Israel overnight Saturday into Sunday, killing at least ten people, including children, and wounding around 200, according to Israeli emergency services. Air raid sirens and booms rang out in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv early Sunday as Israel's military said millions of Israelis were "running for shelter as sirens sound" in dozens of cities and communities around the country.

The first wave of Israeli strikes on Iran killed 78 people and wounded 320, according to Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, but Iranian authorities had not provided an updated toll as of early Sunday. Iran also struck sites used by Israeli warplanes for refuelling, the Revolutionary Guards said early Sunday.

Israel said it had also intercepted seven drones launched towards its territory, as it worked to head off attacks while carrying out further strikes on Iran. Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels on Sunday said they had launched several missiles at Israel.

Iran on Sunday said its attacks on Israel will end once the Jewish state halts its military campaign against the Islamic Republic, adding its response had been based on self-defence.

After targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities, including killing top brass and scientists, Israel expanded targets to air defences and oil infrastructure.

Israeli strikes hit two fuel depots in Tehran, the Iranian oil ministry said Sunday, with AFP journalists reporting seeing fire at the oil depots in Shahran northwest of the Iranian capital.

On Saturday, Israel's military said it was attacking dozens of missile launchers in Iran after announcing it had targeted air defences with a wave of strikes in the Tehran area.

Israel and Iran exchanged fresh attacks early Sunday, with the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claiming an "extensive series of strikes" on the headquarters of the Iranian Defence Ministry and a nuclear project.

-Iran does not want its conflict with Israel to expand to neighbouring countries unless the situation is forced, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Sunday, adding its response had been based on self-defence. Araqchi said Tehran had been responding to foreign aggression, and that if this aggression stopped, Iranian reactions would also cease.

The foreign minister said the Israeli strikes on the offshore South Pars gas field Iran shares with Qatar were "a blatant aggression and a very dangerous act". "Dragging the conflict to the Persian Gulf is a strategic mistake, and its aim is to drag the war beyond Iranian territory," he said.

The foreign minister accused Israel of seeking to sabotage ongoing Iran-U.S. nuclear talks, which according to him could have opened the way for an agreement. Tehran was set to present a proposal this Sunday during a sixth round of talks, which were cancelled following recent escalations. "Israel's attack would never have happened without the U.S. green light and support," Araqchi said, adding Tehran does not believe American statements that Washington had taken no part in recent attacks.

Russia has maintained a delicate balancing act in the Middle East for decades, trying to navigate its warm relations with Israel even as it has developed strong economic and military ties with Iran.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi slammed the United Nations Security Council on Sunday, accusing it of "indifference" over Israel's deadly attacks on the Islamic republic.

In a meeting with foreign diplomats broadcast on state TV, Araghchi said the Israeli attack "is being met with indifference at the Security Council", adding that Western governments have "condemned Iran instead of Israel despite it being the side that was violated". (AFP)

The Israeli military on Sunday urged Iranian civilians to evacuate residential areas near weapons facilities across the country, after waves of Israeli strikes on military targets.

"For your safety, we ask that you evacuate these (areas) immediately and refrain from returning until further notice. Proximity to these facilities puts your life at risk," military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a post on X which was shared in Arabic and Persian. (AFP)

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing Pakistan's unwavering solidarity with Iran after Israel's attacks, which he described as "blatant provocations".

Israel launched attacks on Iranian nuclear and military facilities on Friday. The strikes killed several senior military commanders and nuclear scientists. Iran later launched retaliatory strikes.

In the telephonic conversation with Pezeshkian on Saturday, Sharif strongly condemned Israeli attacks against Iran that he said violated its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and were in complete defiance of the UN Charter and international law. "Spoke with President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran today to express Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with the brotherly people of Iran in the face of Israel’s unprovoked aggression," Sharif posted on X.

Britain is moving additional military assets, including fighter jets, to the Middle East to provide support across the region, Prime Minister Keir Starmer told reporters on Saturday as he was en route to a Group of Seven meeting in Canada.

Benjamin Netanyahu's wedding, which was set for Monday, has been cancelled amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to reports in Hebrew media.

The prime minister's son's wedding caused controversy, drawing ire from some anti-government protesters, who denounced the Netanyahu family for holding a celebration while Israeli hostages are still held in Gaza under the premier's watch, according to the Times of Israel report.  

Israel on June 13 launched a sweeping aerial offensive, striking over 100 strategic targets, from nuclear facilities to military installations, across Iran.

Jordan announced the closure of its airspace late Saturday for a second time since the start of the most intense direct confrontation between arch-foes Israel and Iran.

The civil aviation authority in Jordan, which borders Israel, announced in a statement the closure until further notice of the country's airspace, as well as the suspension of all takeoffs, landings and transit. (AFP)

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to both Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, offering to help de-escalate the conflict. In his call with Pezeshkian, Putin condemned the Israeli strikes and offered his condolences. He noted that Russia has put forward specific initiatives aimed at resolving the situation around the Iranian nuclear program.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Israeli strikes as “categorically unacceptable” and warning that "all the consequences of this provocation will fall on the Israeli leadership.” It urged both parties “to exercise restraint in order to prevent further escalation of tensions and keep the region from sliding into a full-scale war.”

Russia has maintained a delicate balancing act in the Middle East for decades, trying to navigate its warm relations with Israel even as it has developed strong economic and military ties with Iran.

Israel's military strikes this weekend on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, killing top generals and scientists, and Tehran's response with drones and missiles, put Moscow in an awkward position, requiring fine diplomatic skills to preserve ties with both parties. But it also could open opportunities for Russia to possibly become a power broker to help end the confrontation.

Some observers in Moscow also argue that the focus on the confrontation between Israel and Iran could distract global attention from the war in Ukraine and play into Russia's hands by potentially weakening Western support for Kyiv. (AP)

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis said on Sunday that they targeted Israel in coordination with Iran, the first time an Iran-aligned group has publicly announced joint cooperation on attacks with Tehran. The Yemeni group targeted central Israel's Jaffa with several ballistic missiles in the last 24 hours, military spokesperson Yehya Sarea said in a televised address.

"Triumphing for the oppressed Palestinian and Iranian peoples...This operation was coordinated with the operations carried out by the Iranian army against the criminal Israeli enemy," he added.

Israel's military said its forces intercepted on Sunday seven drones launched towards its territory as air raid sirens sounded in the country's north.

"Over the past hour, seven UAVs launched toward Israeli territory were intercepted by the IAF (air force) and Israeli Navy," the military said in a statement, without specifying where the drones were launched from.

Iran has said 78 people were killed there on the first day of Israel's campaign on Friday, and scores more on the second, including 60 when a missile brought down a 14-storey apartment block in Tehran, where 29 of the dead were children.

The Shahran oil depot in Tehran was targeted in an Israeli attack, Iran said, but added the situation was under control. A fire had erupted after an Israeli attack on an oil refinery near the capital while Israeli strikes also targeted Iran's defence ministry building, causing minor damage, the semi-official Tasnim news agency said on Sunday.

"If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before," Trump said in a message on Truth Social. "However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict."

Trump gave no details of any possible deal.

Waves of overnight Iranian strikes on Israel killed at least eight people, including children, according to emergency services, after air raid sirens sent millions across the country scrambling into shelters.

In the central region, at least four people, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed and around 100 others wounded in a rocket strike, according to a spokesperson for Magen David Adom (MDA).

In Shfela region, another 37 people were wounded, the spokesperson added.

Iran was forced to partially halt gas production at the world's largest gas field, South Pars, after an Israeli airstrike caused a fire at one of its key processing units on Saturday.

Iranians and Israelis woke to smoke and rubble on Sunday after the arch-rivals expanded their attacks overnight, with Israel striking Tehran's defence ministry, and Iran unleashing a deadly barrage of missiles.

Air raid sirens and explosions were heard by AFP journalists in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv early Sunday, as Israel's military said millions of Israelis were "running for shelter" around the country.

Israel's emergency services said at least eight people, including children, were killed in the overnight strikes, and around 200 were wounded. (AFP)

Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels said Sunday they had launched several missiles at Israel as it came under Iranian fire, following a massive Israeli bombardment campaign on the Islamic Republic. The Huthis said in a statement they had "carried out a military operation targeting sensitive targets of the Israeli enemy" in central Israel.

The group, which holds vast swathes of territory in Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, said it had targeted the area "at different times over the past 24 hours" with "a number of Palestine 2 hypersonic ballistic missiles". The Huthis said their attacks were "coordinated with the operations carried out by the Iranian military".

The Yemeni rebels began launching missiles and drones at Israel and Israeli-linked targets after the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. Israel has carried out numerous attacks on Huthi-controlled areas of Yemen, including on ports and the airport in Sanaa.

President Donald Trump on Sunday said that the US had "nothing to do" with the overnight attack on Iran, hours after Israel claimed an "extensive series of strikes" on the headquarters of the Iranian Defence Ministry and a nuclear project.

President Trump also warned Iran that the "full strength and might" of the American Armed Forces will "come down on you at levels never seen before" if it tries to attack the US.

"The US had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight. If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before," he posted on Truth Social.

He also said he can "easily" get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and "end this bloody conflict".

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel's strikes had set back Iran's nuclear programme possibly by years and rejected international calls for restraint.

"We will hit every site and every target of the Ayatollahs' regime, and what they have felt so far is nothing compared with what they will be handed in the coming days," he said in a video message on Saturday.

"Israel is defending freedom in the Middle East and beyond. We're doing so against a tyrannical and radical Iranian regime that wants to build atomic bombs to destroy us and wants to build ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, to be able to threaten anyone and everywhere in the world," he added.

At least seven people were reportedly killed in Iranian strikes, including a 10-year-old boy and a woman in her 20s, and more than 140 injured in multiple attacks.

Israeli media said at least 35 people were missing after a strike hit Bat Yam, a city south of Tel Aviv.

Satellite imagery released by Maxar Technologies revealed detailed visual evidence of the destruction caused by Israel's Operation Rising Lion against Iran, a targeted military operation to roll back the Iranian threat of nuclear weapons.

Iran also fire new missile salvo at Israel, reportedly killed at least five people.

Iran said the Shahran oil depot in Tehran was targeted in an Israeli attack. 

The Israeli military also attacked an oil refinery near Tehran. 

Iran also partially suspended production at the South Pars field, the world's biggest gas field, after an Israeli strike caused a fire there on Saturday.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said it completed an "extensive series of strikes on targets in Tehran related to the Iranian regime's nuclear weapons project". 

The targets included the Iranian Ministry of Defence headquarters, the headquarters of the SPND nuclear project, it said in a post on X.

Israel and Iran have exchanged fresh attacks early Sunday, with the Israeli military claiming an "extensive series of strikes" on the headquarters of the Iranian Defence Ministry and the SPND nuclear project.
