Belgium police recover part of 50-mln dollar diamond heist

Brussels: Belgian police on Wednesday recovered part of a 50-million dollar diamond heist pulled off just under three months ago on the Brussels airport tarmac, press reports said.

Early morning raids across Belgium by some 200 police netted part of the spectacular haul at Zaventem airport, the Sudpresse media group said.

The February 18 robbery was at the time described as "one of the biggest" ever by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), the global dealers' syndicate.

The Brussels prosecutor's office was to hold a press conference later.

The brazen heist was carried out by eight men disguised as police officers who pulled up on a runway where a Swiss passenger aircraft was about to take off and forced open the cargo hold to reach gems already loaded onto the plane.

Sudpresse said the raids targeted "a band of known delinquents."
