World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on September 27 to highlight the vital role travel plays in shaping societies, cultures, and economies. Tourism has the power to create global connections, drive sustainable development, and even promote peace. This year's theme, "Tourism and Sustainable Transformation," spotlights the growing importance of environmentally conscious travel.
Sustainable tourism is all about making mindful choices - minimising harm to the planet and local communities while creating positive, lasting benefits for generations to come. It means reducing your carbon footprint, conserving resources, supporting local economies, respecting cultures, and contributing to the well-being of the destinations you visit.
So how do Indian travellers measure up? A recent Booking.com report reveals that 73 per cent of Indian travellers - far higher than the 42 per cent global average - consider sustainability a top priority when planning trips. This growing preference reflects a shift toward eco-friendly travel, where waste reduction, responsible tourism, and authentic cultural experiences guide decision-making.
