There was a time when I used to time my airport arrival with military precision- just enough buffer to make it to the gate before final call, with maybe a coffee in hand if I got lucky. But over time, that's changed. Now, I find myself reaching the airport well in advance, sometimes a good two and a half, even three hours before departure. Not because I'm anxious or overly cautious, but because I genuinely enjoy it. And it turns out, I'm not alone.
For many travellers, the airport experience has evolved from a hurried necessity to something enjoyable, or even indulgent. There's a calm kind of pleasure in arriving early, moving through the motions without stress, and having time to actually soak in the environment. It's like a mini retreat before the journey truly begins.

The Joy Of A Slow Start
Let's be honest-there's something satisfying about breezing through check-in and security without breaking into a nervous sweat. No sprinting to the gate, no "final boarding call" announcements with your name on it. With extra time in hand, everything feels more manageable. You get to observe, to pause, and even to enjoy that transitional space. There's a sense of being outside your daily routine, yet not quite on holiday either. It's the in-between, and it's oddly comforting.
Lounge Life

Airport lounges offer a relaxing wait time treat
One of the biggest perks of arriving early is having time for the airport lounge. What used to be reserved for frequent flyers and business class travellers is now far more accessible. Many lounges allow entry through credit card perks, airline memberships, or even one-time paid access.
And what a difference it makes. Quiet seating areas, clean washrooms, hot food, unlimited coffee, sometimes even wine and beer. Charging ports at every table, newspapers and magazines, sometimes showers and spa treatments. It's a peaceful bubble of comfort before you board your flight. I often use this time to catch up on emails, read a few chapters of a book, or simply stare out the window with a cup of tea in hand.

Retail Therapy, Airport Style

Airport shopping has come a long way. Duty-free is still popular, but there's also a world of high-street fashion, local handicrafts, tech gadgets, skincare brands, and even bookstores that tempt with airport-exclusive editions. I've bought souvenirs, beauty products, snacks, and more; sometimes just browsing is enough. There's something relaxed and fun about shopping when you're not in a rush.

Good Food in Surprising Places

There are plenty of dining options at airports
Another underrated joy of early arrival is food. Airports today offer much more than sandwiches and overpriced muffins. From regional Indian cuisines to global chains and gourmet cafes, the variety is impressive. Sometimes I plan my airport meals- biryani before a long flight, or a hot filter coffee if I'm flying south. It adds a comforting, familiar rhythm to the journey.
In the End...
Arriving early at the airport isn't just a practical choice; it's part of the travel experience I've come to cherish. And honestly, I wouldn't want it any other way.
