An IndiGo flight supposedly turned into a terrifying mid-air experience for passengers when a strong burning smell suddenly filled the cabin, as claimed by a traveller. He recorded the entire ordeal and shared the video on Instagram. He added that even the flight attendants were confused by the smell and were unable to provide any clear explanation for the odour. The video showed travellers complaining about the burning smell while the staff checked overhead bins for its source.
The overlay text read, "Midair, it started to smell like something was on fire inside the plane. People started checking, and air hostesses were running. One guy was saying to make the plane land."
When passengers asked about the odour, the crew claimed that the plane was brand new and had only completed two flights so far. The passenger said, "The air hostesses were also confused, and on top of that, they said that the plane is new and had done only two journeys till now. They did a great job at calming people."
In the caption, the man further described the tense atmosphere inside the IndiGo plane. He wrote, "Why the crew got so scared in the end? They managed eventually, but at first, we were all frightened because of the strong smell and the way the situation was handled."
"No proper technical information was given - people just said it might have come from here or somewhere else. The smell was quite strong, not just a faint one, and it stayed and was also increasing," he added.

The passenger concluded the video by stating that the flight landed safely, but no clear explanation was provided to passengers about the issue. "We landed safely but no one told what actually happened and the staff was also confused. People literally started crying for a few minutes," he recounted.
The video went viral online and sparked a debate about the airlines' safety regulations. One user wrote, "Maybe because it's new, some protective coatings, elements were being 'burnt' off due to heating of components! But, on a serious note, this can be a terrifying and extremely dangerous situation. Glad all were safe."
Another added, "Sometimes smoke comes from the engine."
A user commented, "Outside air. Maybe high level of smoke. The thick smoke can seep into the plane."

An individual shared, "Indigo has been going down in terms of service. On 4th Nov, my daughter had a flight to Bangalore with a stopover at Goa. The flight was at 7:30 pm. We got an email that the flight has been delayed by two hours. We tried contacting the customer care, but it was always busy. With great difficulty, we managed to get a real person online and she said there is no delay. We were like- then why was the mail sent to us?? She very calmly said technical issues."
"The water kettle that they use for heating water also smells at times," remarked a viewer.
NDTV has reached out to IndiGo for a comment. They have not yet responded.
